When everyone was throwing hides away he started buying, cleaning and shipping them. County Judge Ed Bailey nicknamed him "Bullhide" and the name stuck. He was a businessman and there can be no question about that. |

Constantine Smith was the first homesteader in the area near the headwaters of Indian Creek. He and Reinhold Riissio homesteaded the adjoining property to the north and the east. Smith had trouble pronouncing Riissio's name, so he dubbed him "Hooter Scooter" and the name has endured. |

Married in Germany to John Geisel, Christina moved with him to a spot six miles north of Gold Beach in 1854. She watched the Indians massacre her husband and three sons. Later, she was murdered and her killer was the last person to be legally hanged in Curry County. |

She lived 96 glorious years and is truly a Curry County Pioneer. |
